Sick Incremental encoders

07.10.2020

Sick is world well-known sensor manufacturer. The company produces sensors for different applications and purposes. One of the most important products of the company is absolute and incremental encoders.

Sick produces several series of incremental rotary encoders. Rotary encoders define rotation value of its shaft. That shaft is often mounted using a coupling to a motor shaft to determine its rotation value.

The principle of operation of incremental encoders is based on calculating the number of pulses relative to the zero point. The number of pulses per turn (ppr) is a resolution value and indicates accuracy of the device. When such sensor will turn off its all information about current position will be lost. Therefore, measurement always starts from zero point in every operation.

SICK offer different series of incremental encoders:

  • DBS50 Core
  • DBS36 Core
  • DKS40
  • DBS60 Core
  • DFS60 Inox
  • DGS34
  • DGS35

DBS50 Core incremental encoders have universal mechanical connection. There are different variations of flange (face mount or servo flange) and shafts (solid or hollow). The models have compact and robust housing. Devices accuracy is in the range from 10 to 2500 ppr.

DBS36 Core incremental encoders also have flexible mechanical connection as the previous series. Models with hollow and solid shaft are available. Devices have a small housing with diameter of 37 mm and can operate at temperatures from -20 to 85 °C. The resolution range is also similar to DBS50 (10…2500 ppr).

DKS40 series unify high-performance devices. They have compact case, low-cost design and high resolution (1...2048 ppr) in one package. Please pay attention that it is obsolete models and will be phased out soon!

DBS60 Core devices is a universal solution for different industrial applications. They have servo flange or end flange as a mechanical connection. There are two types of shaft: hollow and through hollow. Device has resolution up to 2048 ppr.

DFS60 Inox are reliable programmable encoders with extremely high resolution (up to 65,536 pulses or 16 bits). They have flexible settings of output voltage, zero pulse position and number of pulses per turn.

DGS34 and DGS35 series have large hollow shaft (30 mm) and is created to work in tough conditions. They have special electrical interface and many other features for harsh areas.
